Frequently Asked Questions

Hello Parents!

Welcome to the London Skating Club’s CanSkate program! We hope you will enjoy your time with us. Here are a couple of interesting facts about our program to help you get to know us better! CanSkate is Skate Canada’s flagship ‘learn-to-skate’ program, teaching skaters from 3-83 how to skate. The program is geared to hockey/ringette, speed skating and figure skating. CanSkate has 6 fundamental skills: Going Forwards, Going Backwards, Stopping, Turning, Spinning and Jumping. CanSkate is also divided into 7 ‘badge’ levels. You can earn 16 badges!

Skate Canada Fees - Where does my money go?

Of the $34 Skate Canada fee, some goes to Skate Canada for things such as insurance coverage on the ice, while the rest goes to the Western Ontario Section of Skate Canada for seminars and competitions. London Skating club does not receive any of the $34. We earn our money by selling lottery books and by volunteering at competitions. Skate Canada fees are paid once per fiscal year. Skate Canada’s fiscal year is September 1st - August 31st.
When you receive your membership card, please store it in a safe place, as your registration number is your identification within Skate Canada.

When you receive your tax receipt, please put it in a safe place.
There is a $10 fee to re-issue lost receipts.

Who teaches my child?

CanSkate sessions are divided into a 10 minute warm-up and 10 minutes of creative expression/cool-down run by the session supervisor. The remaining 30 minutes is divided into 3 x 10 minute stations - lessons with a club coach, assessment and our new ‘fun zone‘. Club coaches are certified to teach through Skate Canada, while Program Assistants are volunteers who range in age from 8 - adult. Skaters are grouped according to ability level in a ratio of 1 coach for every 10 skaters. If you have a concern, please address the session supervisor.

Skating is expensive. Is there any financial assistance available?
The London Skating Club is pleased to offer you Fundscript. Fundscript offers you money back towards your child's registration costs, just for doing your everyday shopping! Click on the link below for more details.
